Have a child that feels left out when the big kids go off and play? Are You My Friend, a wonderful iBook from title to credits, is a digital book that confronts just those feelings and lets children know that they aren’t alone in their feelings.

Written by Annie Fox, M.Ed, and illustrated by Eli Noyes this wonderful iBook is published by Electric Eggplant, a company founded in 1992 by Annie and David Fox; bringing family content to their digital audience.

Raymond Alligator is a super smart, super shy 5-year-old who feels left out when big sister Sheila has a friend over. He and his teddy bear are tighter than tight, but lately Raymond’s wondering if he needs someone else to be his friend. Making a new friend sounds like a great idea but, well, it can also be kinda scary. Are You My Friend? is whimsically illustrated, featuring music and sound effects with read-to-me audio narration, and is suitable for 4 to 8 year olds.

Text is highlighted as the story is read by the professional narrator, encouraging children to associate the spoken with the written word. It also helps the younger child to follow along with the story, knowing which pictures are illustrating the storyline as they progress through the book. The soundtrack, which is engaging, can also be turned off so that the words of the narrator are heard by themselves, without distraction. The pages can be turned manually or set to turn automatically, but we think there is much to be said for the simple act of turning a page; it gives downtime, a time for contemplation, a time for interaction.

We love that Annie has included a series of questions at the end of the book, read by the characters themselves. It is a perfect jumping-off point for parents to interact with their own child, get their feedback and let the kids express their own feelings.
